Let Evangelism Begin with Prayer

Metro-DC's Bishop Schneider implements Objective 1 of Evangelism Strategy "Call to Prayer" during a Spiritual renewal closing service

In its recently adopted Evangelism Strategy, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has identified that the first step to effective evangelism is prayer. This was the focus of a recent synod event.

In January 2005, the Congregational Life Team of the Metro Washington DC Synod hosted an event entitled "Together In Mission." This event has been an opportunity to equip congregational leaders with tools for ministry and included a closing worship. This year a new format was introduced highlighting the denomination's new Evangelism Strategy. The first initiative, "A Call to Prayer" was uplifted at this event.

The event began with the keynote by The Rev. Dr. Kathryn Love and included two opportunities for small groups to gather and discuss where prayer is happening in personal lives, in congregations and in the synod. After lunch and a second keynote, the closing included meditational music and prayer stations for commissioning, healing, and consecration of baptism. The closing prayer feast culminated with Bishop Theodore Schneider of the Metro DC Synod lighting candles for each person present. Each congregation was invited to carry the candle back to their church and place it on the altar during worship as a symbol of their ministries together and as a reminder of the focus on prayer.
